Best Time to Visit Uttarakhand: Month-by-Month Guide

Rahul Sharma November 25, 2024 9 min read
Uttarakhand — the "Land of Gods" — is blessed with a stunning variety of landscapes: snow-capped peaks, lush meadows, sacred rivers, ancient temples, and dense forests. But when you visit matters enormously. From frozen winter roads to monsoon landslides and glorious post-rain clarity — here's a month-by-month guide to plan the perfect Uttarakhand trip.

January–February: Winter Wonderland

Best for: Auli skiing, Munsiyari snowscapes, Chopta snow trekking.
Avoid: Char Dham (temples closed), high-altitude treks (dangerous snowfall).
Weather: Extremely cold (−5°C to 10°C), heavy snowfall above 2,000m.
Special events: Auli Skiing Festival (January)

March–April: Spring Bloom

Best for: Chopta-Tungnath trek (snow clearing), Nainital, Mussoorie, Haridwar visits.
Avoid: Char Dham until May (temples open late April).
Weather: 8°C–20°C, rhododendrons in full bloom (March–April).
Special events: Holi celebrations in Haridwar (divine!), Char Dham opening dates (late April)

May–June: Peak Pilgrimage Season

Best for: Char Dham Yatra, Valley of Flowers opening, Kedarnath trek, Haridwar–Rishikesh.
Avoid: June in low-altitude areas (starts to get hot).
Weather: 12°C–25°C at high altitude, pleasant and clear skies.
Special events: Char Dham Yatra at full swing, Ganga Dussehra (June)

May is the sweet spot for Char Dham — post-opening rush has settled, weather is clear, and roads are in good condition.

July–August: Monsoon Magic

Best for: Valley of Flowers (peak bloom!), Nainital, Lansdowne, Corbett (lush and green).
Avoid: High-altitude treks (landslides), road travel to Kedarnath/Badrinath (frequent closures).
Weather: Heavy rainfall, lush green valleys, cool temperatures (15°C–22°C).
Special events: Valley of Flowers peak bloom, Hariyali Devi Fair

September–October: Golden Season

Best for: All treks (Kedarnath, Roopkund, Har Ki Dun), Char Dham (post-monsoon clarity), Nainital, Rishikesh.
Avoid: Nothing major — this is arguably the best time!
Weather: Crystal clear, 8°C–22°C, zero humidity, 360° Himalayan views.
Special events: Char Dham closing dates (October), Navratri, Dussehra

November–December: Quiet Retreat

Best for: Haridwar Diwali (thousands of diyas on the Ganga), Nainital Christmas, Corbett wildlife safari.
Avoid: High mountain areas start closing (Char Dham temples close in November).
Weather: Getting cold fast, 0°C–15°C in mountains, frost at night.
Special events: Diwali Ganga Aarti in Haridwar (spectacular!), Char Dham closing ceremony
